HVAC Jobs- Are You A Specialist?

That old triumvirate of heating, ventilation and air conditioning are well known in the world of commercial construction: from the Cambridge Library that appears to rain on the inside to the latest City skyscrapers, huge attention (some of it successful, some of it not) has been paid to the way in which these three interlock. To the non-specialist it all seems far too complex of course: opening the window to ventilate destroys any possibility of being able to heat or cool.

Traditionally all three have been performed by a variety of mechanical contraptions, some of which did indeed work at odds with each other (not to mention the way in which continual recycling of already heated or cooled air led to 'sick building syndrome' and worse).

The challenge in this field in the future is going to be two fold: how to bring such techniques to the domestic construction industry is one. The continual rises in the numbers of asthma sufferers as environmental pollution continues to fall is making many more think that it might be the near hermetically sealed central heating systems that are in some part to blame. How will it be possible, at reasonable cost, to both heat ( and potentially cool) houses while still making sure there is adequate replacement ventilation?

The second applies to both the commercial (and I include the office sector in this) and the domestic sector. How to provide the heating, cooling and ventilation necessary at the very lowest energy costs possible? Can it in fact be done with no net energy expenditure at all? The emissions from buildings do amount to a significant part of the CO2 emissions leading to climate change, after all. It is even possible to be somewhat amused at some of the gyrations of environmentalists like George Monbiot. He points to the German Passivhaus standards as being the way forward, they use entirely passive heating and cooling systems. What he conveniently ignores is that you can only build a few per acre, meaning that to make this standard houses will have to cover more of the countryside: which he doesn't want either.

Those might be the two challenges likely to face HVAC specialists in the future but in the here and now there's a shortage across the industry of those with the needed knowledge of the current systems. For those wanting to take advantage of it it might be worth contacting the recruitment specialists at Talisman: there could be someone out there willing to pay very much better for your services, as often happens when there's a shortage.
